Southern for “It’s a good day”

March 20, 2007

People in other parts of the world think that here in the God’s country (as we affectionately like to call the South) we talk funny.  Not funny haha, but funny strange.  Perhaps we do like to stretch syllables a little, or add conjunctions where none should be.  After living here a while, you hardly even notice anymore.

Take for example the simple question:  “How are you doing today?”  There’s no doubt this could be answered quite simply with, “I’m fine”, “great” or even a simple “OK”.  But some southerners feel compelled to explain just how “good” their day is.  Here is a short list of possible answers to the question above:

  • If it got any better, I couldn’t stand it.
  • If it got any better, I’d have to shoot my dog to keep from grinning.
  • If it got any better, I’d have to sit on my hands to keep from clapping.
  • It’s all chicken but the gravy.

As you may have guessed, all these responses imply that “it’s all good”, which is pretty much how it is most of the time here in “God’s” country.
